Veteran director Im Gwontaek's 99th ambitious film dramatizes the life and love of a third-rate gangster who lived a turbulent life between the late 1950s and the early 1970s, when the fist was mightier than the pen in every affair - private or public. By accident, Taeung (Jo Seungu) is stabbed in the thigh by Seungmun, the son of opposition party lawmaker Park Ilwon. In order get revenge, Taeung immediately visits Seungmun's house, where he encounters Hyeok (Kim Minseon), Seungmun's elder sister. Under the order of the ruling government, the police question Taeung to investigate the political scandal of Park, but he zips his mouth to protect the family. During the general election when Park runs for another term as an independent lawmaker, Taeung beats organized crime ring leader Salmosa and gets hired at a Myeongdong night-club, Miami - a hub of the Myeongdong faction. The Myeongdong faction, however, eventually crumbles due to the governing Liberal Party's intervention, but Taeung survives and finally succeeds in marrying Hyeok, now a schoolteacher, resisting the opposition of her father. On the day when Hyeok undergoes the pangs of childbirth, the May 16th military coup d’etat breaks out and Park Chung Hee rises to power. From that time on, Taeung's life is further embroiled in bitter turmoil without knowing limits. The film's soundtrack introduces the old popular song "My Lover Far Away" [Nimeun Meongose] sung by Kim Chuja in 1970. Like director Im Chansang's "The President's Barber," this movie faithfully follows the historical events of Korean politics in chronological order from the April 19 Students" Movements to the period when President Park Chung Hee declared the Yusin (Revitalizing Reforms) Constitution aimed at assuming permanent power. The film, nevertheless, is far from political satire whether the director intended it or not. This movie is somewhat reminiscent of director Im's former hit trilogy "The Son of the General" (1990-1992) where the legendary political gangster Kim Duhan is portrayed as a nationalistic fighter beating the Japanese yakuzas (Japanese mafias). Actor Jo made his film debut appearing in Im's previous movie "The Story of Chunhyang" (1999). |
